    YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR READING THIS NOTICE IN ITS ENTIRETYBEFORE YOU SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION.WHAT THE JOB INVOLVES
    : Automotive Service Workers, under varying levels of supervision and degrees ofdifficulty, assist in, perform, and supervise automotive maintenance services, inspection, and repair work. Thereare two assignment levels within this class of positions.
    At Assignment Level 1:
    Automotive Service Workers, under direct supervision, perform simple repairs andautomotive maintenance services such as preventive maintenance inspection, battery service, checking,servicing, patching and changing tires; lubrication and oil change; clean, wash and polish vehicles; clean interiorof vehicles; dispense gasoline and oil; check the level, and refill automobile fluids such as coolant, oil,transmission and brake fluids; assist in performing tune ups, in shops and on the road, and in replacement ofengine parts, drivetrains, transmissions, steering gear and components, ignition, heating and cooling systems,air conditioning components, brake system, lighting system, sirens and back-up warning tone systems, etc.;operate motor vehicles to test repairs; may operate a tow truck when duties require; and maintain and updatevehicle service and repair records. All Automotive Service Workers perform related work.Some of the physical activities performed by Automotive Service Workers and environmental conditionsexperienced are: working in a non-temperature controlled environment; climbing ladders; moving heavyautomotive parts; carrying heavy tool boxes; crawling and working in narrow spaces; working in the vicinityofbiohazards.
    Special Working Conditions
    : Automotive Service Workers may be required to work shifts including nights,Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays(This is a brief description of what you might do in this position and does not include all the duties of thisposition.)
    THE SALARY
    : The current minimum salary is $30,679 per annum. This rate is subject to change.
    HOW TO APPLY

    Special Circumstances Guide
    : This guide is located on the DCAS website at
    and available at the DCASComputer-based Testing & Applications Centers. This guide gives important information about claimingVeterans' or Legacy credit, and notifying DCAS of a change in your mailing address. Follow all instructionson the Special Circumstances Guide that pertain to you when you complete your "Application forExamination."
    HOW TO QUALIFY
    : You are responsible for determining whether or not you meet the qualification requirementsfor this examination prior to submitting your application. If you are marked "Not Qualified," your applicationfee will not be refunded and you will not receive a score.
    Education and Experience Requirements
    :1. Two years of full-time satisfactory experience performing automotive maintenance services, such aslubrication, inspection and oil changing, acquired in a garage or gasoline service station; or
    2. Graduation from a trade high school, vocational high school or technical high school approved by a State’sDepartment of Education or a recognized accredited organization in a course of study in automotivemaintenance and repair;
    or
    3. An Associate Degree from a college or university accredited by regional, national, professional, or specializedagencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for HigherEducation Accreditation (CHEA) with a major in automotive technology;
    or
    4. A satisfactory combination of education and experience which is equivalent to 1, 2, or 3 above; six monthsof acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade high school, vocational high school,technical high school, college or university education.
    The education requirement must be met by June 30, 2014. The experience requirement must be met by thelast day of the Application Period.
    If you were educated outside the United States, you must have your foreign education evaluated to determineits equivalence to education obtained in the United States. This is required only if you need credit for yourforeign education in this examination.
    You must clearly specify in detail all of your relevant education and experience on your Education andExperience Test and submit it by the end of the application period. You will not receive credit for educationwhich you obtain after June 30, 2014 or experience which you obtain after the end of the application period,nor will you be permitted to submit new or additional information about your education and experienceonce the application period has ended.Driver License Requirement
    : At the time of appointment, you must possess a motor vehicle driver license validin the State of New York. Serious moving violations, license suspension or accident record may disqualify. ThisDriver License must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
    Drug Screening Requirement (for appointment to the New York City Police Department only)
    : You mustpass a drug screening in order to be appointed.
    Residency Requirement Advisory
    : Under New York City Administrative Code Section 12-120, you mightneed to be a resident of the City of New York within 90 days of the date you are appointed to this position.Since residency requirements vary by title, appointing agency and length of service, consult the appointingagency's personnel office at the time of the appointment interview to find out if City residency is required.
    English Requirement
    : You must be able to understand and be understood in English.
    Proof of Identity
    : Under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, you must be able to prove youridentity and your right to obtain employment in the United States prior to employment with the City of NewYork.
    REQUIRED INFORMATION

    1. Application for Examination
    : Follow the online instructions, including those relating to the paymentof fee and, if applicable, those found in the Special Circumstances Guide.
    2. Education and Experience Test
    : Fill out Sections A.1 (if applicable), A.2 (if applicable), A.3 (ifapplicable), A.4 (if applicable), B (if applicable), and D (if applicable). This test must be filled outcompletely and in detail for you to receive your proper rating. Follow the online instructions.
    3. Foreign Education Evaluation Guide
    (Required only if you need credit for your foreign educationin this examination): If you were educated outside the United States, you must have your foreigneducation evaluated to determine its equivalence to education obtained in the United States. Theservices that are approved to make this evaluation are listed on the Foreign Education EvaluationG u i d e l o c a t e d o n t h e D C A S w e b s i t e a t
    When you contact the evaluationservice, ask for a "document-by-document" (general) evaluation of your foreign education. Youmust have one of these services submit its evaluation of your foreign education directly to theDepartment of Citywide Administrative Services no later than eight weeks from the last date forapplying for this examination.
    THE TEST
    : Your score will be determined by an education and experience test. You will receive a score of 70points for meeting the education and experience requirements listed above. After these requirements are met,you will receive additional credit up to a maximum of 100 points on the following basis:

    If you have satisfactory full-time experience performing automotivemaintenance services, such as lubrication, inspection and oil changing,acquired in a garage or gasoline service station for: You will receive:
    At least 1 year, but less than 3 years 10 pointsAt least 3 years, but less than 5 years 20 points5 or more years 30 pointsYou will receive a maximum of one year of experience credit for each year you worked. If you have any of theabove experience on a part-time basis, it will be credited according to the equivalent percent of full-timeexperience.
    Experience used to meet the minimum requirements cannot be used to gain additional credit.You must clearly specify in detail all of your relevant education and experience on your Education andExperience Test and submit it by the end of the application period. You will not receive credit for educationwhich you obtain after June 30, 2014 or experience which you obtain after the end of the application period,nor will you be permitted to submit new or additional information about your education and experienceonce the application period has ended.Experience must be obtained by the last day of the application period.
    THE TEST RESULTS
    : If you pass the education and experience test, your name will be placed in final score orderon an eligible list and you will be given a list number. You will be notified by mail of your test results. If youmeet all requirements and conditions, you will be considered for appointment when your name is reached onthe eligible list.
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    The following opportunity for Selective Certification is only available for appointment to positions in theDepartment of Transportation.Selective Certification for Class A Commercial Driver License with Towing Endorsement:
    If you have aClass A Commercial Driver License with Towing Endorsement that is valid in the State of New York, youmay be considered for appointment to positions requiring this license through a process called SelectiveCertification. If you qualify for Selective Certification, you may be given preferred consideration for positionsrequiring this license. If you wish to apply for this Selective Certification, state "CLT" in Section D of theEducation and Experience Test. Your Driver License will be checked by the appointing agency at the timeof appointment. If you are appointed through Selective Certification, you must maintain your Class ACommercial Driver License with Towing Endorsement for the duration of your employment.Drug Screening Requirement: Candidates who are considered for appointment to positions through the aboveSelective Certification must pass a drug screening in order to be appointed.
    Selective Certification for New York State Certification as a Motor Vehicle Inspector:
    If you have New YorkState Certification as a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Light Vehicles, Group 1 and New York StateCertification as a Motor Vehicle Inspector certified in Heavy Vehicles, Group 2, you may be considered forappointment to positions requiring these certificates through a process called Selective Certification. If youqualify for Selective Certification, you may be given preferred consideration for positions requiring thesecertificates. If you wish to apply for this Selective Certification, state "NYS Motor Vehicle Inspector " inSection D of the Education and Experience Test. Your certificates will be checked by the appointing agencyat the time of appointment. If you are appointed through Selective Certification, you must maintain yourcertifications for the duration of your employment.The above Selective Certification requirements may be met at anytime during the duration of the list.     Application Receipt
