How to Become a Martial Arts Instructor: 9 steps - wikiHow

          Steps

          1
Realize first that people don't care how much karate you know, who you trained with or how many trophies you may (or may not) have won. The better you can market your ability to help people with your teaching, the more people you'll be able to teach. So, don't get sidetracked by the success of less "deserving" instructors. (Besides, if you really look deep into it -- the so-called "less-qualified" karate instructors, who do make a good living, usually have a student roster of very, very, happy students.) Ask yourself this: "What #1 benefit will my karate instruction provide"? Spend more time answering that question and you'll rarely -- if ever -- have to worry about "finding" students; they'll find you!

Define possible locations (places that are already set up for you to host a class) where you can get experience teaching while spending little (maybe even zero) money. Health clubs; rec-centers; churches; community centers -- these are all great examples of places that may let you start teaching. Remember, the "future students" you'll be teaching don't know where you teach -- so don't let the "non-professional" theme of sub-letting space deter you from getting going! Many "successful" instructors have started this way and it is STILL the #1 way to get going without risking a bunch of cash.
          3
Get over the fact that the martial arts industry is an unregulated game of "I'm a master". It's great to have credentials, but it's largely a waste of time pursuing "rank" for the sake of how it appears in a yellow pages ad. Again, people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care (and they never care much for instructors who are more concerned with the "alphabet soup" at the end of their name than giving their students the best possible instruction. Besides, although all instructors should be Black Belts -- not all black belts should be instructors.
          4
Market yourself. It's time to tell the world about your class. Don't be bashful: You've got to be willing to throw the modest Mr. Miyagi humble-guy/gal approach out the window. Most people, deep in their hearts, don't really want to train with a "humble" Zen-like monk -- they'd rather train with somebody who's a bit of a renegade and who's not afraid of saying, "Hey, here's why our style is better than such and such and here's why you should study with me."
          5
Buy a mailing list of the type of prospect (that's business lingo for "ideal potential karate student") that you think you'll either attract, prefer, or otherwise end up teaching by way of either your personal style or characteristics. For example: I've always had a knack for teaching kids. The purpose of advertising is to create a "lead" (person with interest in karate); the purpose of creating a lead is to "convert" that person into a "prospect" (someone who's very interested and is ready and looking for karate). By purchasing the name and address of every "potential" prospect -- you'll save yourself thousands of wasted dollars in conventional advertising by running large ads in local papers just to find a "lead". Simply "buy" all your leads and treat them as if they were already interested in taking lessons with you.
          6
Create and mail out a minimum of six marketing messages (preferably on postcards -- and no, they don't have to be the shiny, fancy ones either) inviting these "leads" to take a very, very, low-risk "next step". (Make your "next step" something easy-to-do. Don't ask for or suggest that they spend money with you right away - that's what the conventional karate schools are all doing. Instead, offer a free consumer report like: "5 Things You Need To Know Before You Even Think of Visiting a Karate or Martial Arts School" -- or -- "Kids Karate: How to choose one based on your child's personality". You get the idea.
          7
Develop strong phone skills. Probably the most overlooked "skill" in becoming successful and well-paid martial arts instructor is the skill in answering the phone. You must possess the skill of getting someone to go from "Passive Phone Talker" all the way to "Active Participant". And you'll do this by getting everyone who calls you to commit to (and show up for) an introductory lesson. You can make your "Intro" FREE, or, you can offer a nominal, low-risk fee for "test driving" your expert instruction.
          8
Be able to ask your prospects for money once they've demonstrated a real interest. The best way to do this is to practice it on people who you've not spent money on (i.e. role play with your friends, family, spouse, etc). Sit or stand in front of them and tell them to pretend as if they just took a free class with you moments ago.... and then practice saying, "The best part of our program, John, is that all you need to get started today is $295 dollars -- how did you want to take care of that; by check, cash, or credit card?"
          9
Teach your guts out. Now that you’re a professional martial arts instructor (because you've just been paid), you've only done half the job as a "professional". See, the first part of being a professional martial art instructor is 'getting paid' the other half is called 'keeping your promise'. Now your job's to teach every class as if it were your last! Teach with enthusiasm, and teach as if you had a crystal ball... and pretend that before you see your next student, that you saw a vision of them quitting! How differently would you teach your partners if your crystal ball told you that the next class would be their last class?
