Wes Montgomery - The Incredible Jazz Guitar [JVC Victor VICJ 41531]
January 23, 2002 | Original Release Date: January 26, 1960 | JVC Victor | ASIN: B00000JAKK

MP3+CUE+PAR2+COVERS | RAR | 61.87 MB

This is one of Wes Montgomery's greatest recordings, a classic that really alerted the world about the talents of the guitarist. In a quartet with pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Albert Heath, Montgomery introduced his originals "West Coast Blues," "Four on Six," and "D-Natural Blues," performed his "Mister Walker," and stretched out on "Airegin," the ballad "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," "In Your Own Sweet Way," and "Gone With the Wind." All of the unique qualities of Montgomery's style are on display on this essential CD reissue, which is also available as part of his 12-CD Riverside boxed set.

Wes Montgomery - Full House [Riverside OJCCD-106-2]

An audiophile reissue of an Original Jazz Classics CD also currently available, this live set is notable for teaming guitarist Wes Montgomery and the Wynton Kelly Trio (comprised of pianist Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb) with the fiery tenor of Johnny Griffin. As with the OJC release, six selections (highlighted by "Blue 'n' Boogie" and Montgomery's "S.O.S.") are augmented by "Born to Be Blue" and a pair of alternate takes.

Wes Montgomery - Tequila
Verve (Master Edition) | 1966/1999 24-bit remastered | 547 769-2
Jazz | EAC (APE+CUE+LOG) | digipack and CD label scans | 287 MB

Tracks:
1 Tequila (Rio) 3:23
2 Little Child (Daddy Dear) (Shanklin) 2:29
3 What the World Needs Now Is Love (Bacharach, David) 5:00
4 The Big Hurt (Shanklin) 4:34
5 Bumpin' on Sunset (Montgomery) 4:51
6 Insensatez (How Insensitive) (DeMoraes, Jobim) 3:47
7 The Thumb (Montgomery) 4:51
8 Midnight Mood (Raleigh, Zawinul) 5:35
9 Wives and Lovers (Bacharach, David) 3:00
10 Tequila [alternate take] (Rio) 2:40
11 The Big Hurt [alternate take] (Shanklin) 3:30
12 Bumpin' on Sunset [alternate take] (Montgomery) 3:17

On two of the songs included on Tequila, "Tequila" and "The Thumb," Wes Montgomery had an opportunity to jam a bit while backed just by bassist Ron Carter, drummer Grady Tate and the congas of Ray Barretto. The other six selections utilize a string section arranged by Claus Ogerman but, even with a throwaway version of "What the World Needs Now Is Love," there are memorable renditions of "Bumpin' on Sunset" and "Insensatez" that uplift this album quite a bit beyond the guitarist's later A&M recordings.
