Genre: Nu-Jazz

Molvær is just one of many Europeans who embrace a variety of musical styles to fuse with jazz improvisation. This is the type of jazz that can be easily found on the ECM label, and this could very well be the turning point in jazz where the Europeans surpass the Americans. While we are busy looking backward, Europeans like Molvær are looking full stream ahead towards the future and towards innovation. Standout tracks that display Molvær’s sonic trumpet are “Khmer,” “Tløn,” and “On Stream.” Definitely worth checking out. ~ All About Jazz

There have been attempts to duplicate the musical results and the commercial success of this disc – including a couple by Molvær himself, but Khmer is the real thing. Molvær combined incredibly creative musicians, intensely interesting, well-crafted tunes and the signature crystalline sound of the ECM sound studio to produce a musical experience which is equal parts World Music, Electronica, Jazz, Folk, Cinematic Soundtrack, trip hop, disco, funk. The predominant narrative voice throughout Khmer is Molvær’s trumpet with fine contributions by the guitarist and keyboard player laid over a dense bed of percussion and bass.

This music will sneak up on you. It will assault you. It will surprise you. It will lull you into an inner space in your head where images will flash before your eyes. What this music isn’t is: New Age. There is too much sonic edge, not enough melodic aimlessness and too much poignancy to the images the music conjures up for this recording to be New Age Music.

In this day and age of compartmentalization it is refreshing to hear something that is intelligent, entertaining and (especially) without boundaries.

Nils Petter Molvær, Norwegian trumpet player, composer and producer, connects stylistic extremes - jazz, ambient, house, electronic and breakbeats - and effortlessly melts them into convincing soundscapes of deep intensity. universalmusic.no

Born in 1960 in Sula (Norway), Nils Petter was introduced to jazz from an early age by his musician father. After playing in school bands and local clubs he left Sula in 1979 to study music at the conservatory of Trondheim, where he developed his unique style and started to gain a reputation as one of Norway's emerging new talents.

Nils Petter has eclectic musical influences who he names as Miles Davis, Don Cherry, Billie Holiday, Brian Eno, Joni Mitchell and Bill Laswell. His interest in both acoustic and electric music shows the ease with which he handles the conventions of pop, rock and funk, alongside those of modern jazz. These unique sensibilities soon established him as a much sought after musician in Oslo. After his intermezzo with the Norwegian jazz combo Masqualero, Nils Petter was introduced to Manfred Eicher, who integrated him into his cast of musicians and studio sessions with ECM artists such as Robyn Schulkowsky.

Nils Petter completed his debut album as a leader with "Khmer" in 1997, which focuses on a previously unknown blend of improvisation and hypnotically spinning beats, receiving extraordinary public and media response, and was honoured with the German Record Critics Award and a Norwegian Grammy.
