Well... It's hard to give an advice about basic because it changes since I was there, but you can look at these articles to familirize yourself (in case you still didn't do this) abd if you have more questions I'll try to answer them.

We didn't have any M16 until the fifth week of training - it's pain in the butt to carry it with you all the time... and I see they want to make basic 7 weeks now - I'm glad I don't have to do this again.

This is something new to me.. My BMET school was in Sheppard. I think this is another change since I graduated. Maybe this is good thing or maybe not. You can leave of base if you have family in the local area and your school is over 20 weeks. So it seems to me it's not gonna make much sence bring your wife (and I think you are not going to be authorized to do this) while you are in Lackland, but as soon as you move to Sheppard you'll be able to move out and live either in on-base housing or off-base (your choice). As I said my whole schoole was in Sheppard, so after getting into Phase 2 I said good bye to dorm, but if they catch you doing something what they cosider violation - they will move you back in the dorm

(after 4 weeks on base - you might be Phase 2 when you get to Sheppard from Lackland - hope this is how it works now) I moved off-base (lived just across the base, so I still heard all the tornado warnings - you'll see what I'm talking about, especially in March-May timeframe - don't buy new car

)

This one is a good question - there is no definitive answer. I've been to couple bases (western part) and I can tell you what bases I didn't like, but again this is my personal opinion:
Sheppard AFB - hate this place, soon you'll know why.
Lackland AFB - basic training - all my memories, but maybe if you are permanent party there it's different.
I didn't like Mountain Home AFB - closest entertainment - Walmart in about 10 miles from base. Malmstrom AFB - only if you like outdoors... and cold weather. Edwards AFB - huge base with nothing around for many miles.
Travis - pretty good choice - big hospital - you'll get good experience - San Francisco and Sacramento about an hour away - you can go to Tahoe if you like skiing, rafting hiking etc, or go to ocean sailing, diving etc... they have aeroclub on base too (a lot of bases do), so if you want you can get your pilot license.
Hill AFB - nice location, not to far from Salt Lake City
Fairchild AFB - never been ther, but heard good things about it.
Vendenberg AFB - right on the beach. (or you can go to Hawaii

too)
Beale AFB - big base with not much on it (people are hunting deers on base

).
I'm sure there is a lot of other bases that are nice, but again it's your personal choice what part of US you like the most. I'm not listing overseas bases - because until you become a citizen and get your clearance - you are, most likely, not going to get it, but just to mention - I liked Aviano AB in Italy, Ramstein AB (Germany )is too crowded, but you have the chance to see the whole Europe and more, a lot of people also trying to get Japan (I personally don't).
What I would do first find out what geografical part of UC you like the most, then find out what bases there are available to you, and then make a list of 8 bases starting with #1 you want the most - this is how you are going to do it on basic (8 stateside and 8 overseas bases) and hope for the best, but you will not know your base until you get in Sheppard and be in school for couple months - so it's long way from here (basic going to be looong, hot, and not much fun at all, so just suck it up do it - I wanted so many times to quit to be honest, and I'm glad I didn't, after all it's just 6.5 weeks... and 11 months of school - almost forgot about this too

)
