After spotting Dream Theater in 1997 I was falling into infinity and got curious about other releases from the band. The next I bought was this one (the european edition) because I wanted to hear something about their live qualities. Now I have to admit - not a bad decision - not absolutely the best but a very good live effort from the band (including a masterpiece!). One minus is to state: the total length is just like a Vinyl Long Player. But therefore the quality of the performance is nothing to criticise.
We have 3 songs from the last effort 'Images and Works' - whereas I'm missing 'Learning to live'. Metropolis, Surrounded and Pull me under are as excellent as the studio version. And they played also two songs from their first output 'When Dream and Day unite'. A Fortune in Lies and Another Hand - The Killing Hand are working live and with LaBrie much better.
But the best song without any discussion is Bombay Vindaloo - an incredible jam, perfectly played. Petrucci in best form and Kevin Moore gets in late but very sentimentally. This song is different to the others and until today one of my band favourites.
For a long time I only skipped to track 3 when I had this release in my player. But for this review I took on to have time to listen to the other songs. And what a surprise, I have to take back my former impression: they are not disappointing at all! Fitted out with the outstanding Bombay Vindaloo this is an excellent addition. ~ Review by Uwe Zickel @ Prog Archives
This live disc from Dream Theater's first ever European tour in '93 is definitely a must-own for any fan. As you can see there are only 6 songs, but the cd is still around 45 minutes long. I don't care too much for 'Pull Me Under,' but I never did. Alas, it is their early hit, and it would be stupid to think they wouldn't put it on here, so I'll let that one slide!
The fact that these musicians perform almost perfectly on studio recordings is very nice...the quality of their performance in a live setting is equally astounding, and will make your jaw drop if you're not expecting it. It is definitely a sobering experience. There's so much lousy garbage in mainstream music today, like The Dave Matthews Band and Greenday. Those bands are nice if you have the IQ of a dog, but for those of us that require a musical experience just a bit more intellectually demanding, we can always listen to records like Live At The Marquee.
My all-time favorite live recordings of 'Metropolis,' 'A Fortune in Lies,' 'Another Hand/The Killing Hand,' and 'Surrounded' are to be found on this album. There's also an instrumental called 'Bombay Vindaloo' that appears to be at least 50% improvised. This is the only place I have ever found this track, and its a hidden gem...BIG TIME! It has some of the most original assemblance of riffs I've ever heard from John Petrucci. The time changes are obviosuly mind-boggling - I mean, did you really expect anything less? The musical atmoshpere also shifts in a 'flowing' style, which I find to be a sure fire method of recognizing this band, especially in the 90's. This instrumental sounds too 'free' to be 100% planned, but sounds too good to be completely improvised.
It would be a good idea to purchase this along with Images and Words, to better understand the entity that was Dream Theater back in their earlier years. It was a truly magnificent approach. ~ Review by Christopher Calabrese
