![]() Patricia Barber - Nightclub [UDSACD 2004] 2002 Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab | GAIN 2 Ultra Dynamic Super Audio Compact Disc EAC-WV/CUE | Covers | 299 MB On Nightclub, Patricia Barber extends an invitation for us to stay up late and keep her company in on intimate aural incubus of sound, as the neon lights invite denizens of the night to alight at a ringside table and throw down another bottle of wine, as the syncopated sister at her ebony piano - backlit in soft focus like some film noire Dietrich - intones some things borrowed, and others blued. The room is transformed into a sonic womb, as this weaver of dreams sits at her loom, wafting lazily behind the beat with her sing-song phrasing and coy percussive attack, leaving her bassist and drummer to finish the phrase, with just enough space between the chords of this collective rumination for the rest of us to write our own film treatments in the diffuse azure haze of self-reflection. That my friend is a jazz singer, and in a sense, the nightclub is Patricia Barber's true home, a place where we can kick back and share another smoke, as she illuminates a subtext fraught with danger and ambiguity, through a soundscape of silences and pauses other more giddy song-birds might overlook in their impatience to race through the form, whence they might commence to scoobydoowoh… spotlight on moi. … Chip Stern Contributing Editor Stereophile & Jazz Times Line-up/Musicians Patricia Barber - vocals, piano Michael Arnopol - bass (5, 9, 10) Adam Cruz - drums (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11) Charlie Hunter - 8-string guitar (4, 6, 11) Marc Johnson - bass (1, 2, 3, 7, 8) Adam Nussbaum - drums (1, 2, 3, 7, 8) Track listing 1. What a wonderful experience. Patricia Barber has taken her art to a higher level on "Verse". Being a fan of her previous work, I was excited to learn that this project would contain all original songs. Previous recordings, "Cafe Blue" and "Modern Cool" gave us plenty of glimpses into Barber's song writing capabilities. These songs have some of the most interesting lyrics I have heard in a long time. They are brought to life by music that uses space and odd timbre to lift the vocals to an almost visual level. You can see the paintings that each song sketches. This is high-end art. This music comes at you from several different directions. At one moment you are trapped in the wonderfully twisted lyrics and the next minute you are completely intrigued by the excellent music. It doesn't hurt that the musicians used on "Verse" are first rate exploratory Jazz artist. Barber's piano is as warm and vibrant as ever, but her singing is absolutely beautiful. The contrast between her voice and Dave Douglas' trumpet will give you goose bumps. There is a dark and introspective quality to this music that brings to mind Joni Mitchell's "Hejira" recording from the late 70's. All ten of these songs are wonderful - so it is not possible to pick a favorite. Each composition contains its own halo of beauty. If you are tired of warmed over standards and need a new vibe - pick up "Verse." This music is refreshing, stimulating and beautiful. Great job Patricia - you have created a modern classic. Track Listing 1. Moon 2. Lost in This Love 3. Clues 4. Pieces 5. I Could Eat Your Words 6. Fire 7. Regular Pleasures 8. Dansons la Gigue 9. You Gotta Go Home 10. And, oh my, did they ever do a superb job! Audiophiles will rejoice at MFSL's superlative sonics. And while this CD is a curious choice for the comeback, it really does work. Probably the dynamic range of this recording had a lot to do with the selection, and surely Ms. Barber delivers a fine performance. Track Listing 1. What A Shame 2. Mourning Grace 3. | Patricia Barber: Mythologies Jazz vocal | MP3 320 > 152 Mb | Flac > 351 Mb | Pt 60:36 | Blue Note | 2006 ![]() Considerable time, thought and Guggenheim grant money went into the making of Patricia Barber's Mythologies, an ambitious modern take on Ovid's Metamorphoses. As she is wont to do, the Chicagoan continually reminds us of her aspirations to art with her joyless, half-whispered vocals and show-offy intellectualism. The song sequence, which seems destined for a staged reading, never escapes its literary trappings. But in reflecting on the age-old dance of dreams and destiny, the poetry is mostly good, and sometimes better than that ("unrequited love/is what i know of love/spellbound/I will stay"). And though Barber mostly keeps her considerable skills as a pianist under wraps after getting in some seductive and darkly rumbling licks early on, the varied musical settings prop the songs up. Mythologies ranges from jazz balladry to Hendrixian reveries (via guitarist Neal Alger), lifts openly from Joni Mitchell's Hejira, and tells another tale with hip-hop and a children's choir. This isn't an album for the Diana Krall set, and even some of Barber's early followers may take a pass, but for listeners on her wavelength, it will cast a spell. --Lloyd Sachs Patricia Barber piano & vocals Neal Alger guitar Michael Arnapol bass Eric Montzka drums Tracks: 1. ![]() Patricia Barber: A Distortion Of Love Jazz vocal | Flac > 328 Mb | MP3 320 > 141 Mb | Pt 58:49 | Antilles | 1992 | Covers Pianist and singer Patricia Barber's second album (and major-label debut) is a consistently interesting, but not always completely rewarding, array of original instrumentals, vocal standards, and surprise cover versions. The arrangement of "Summertime" that opens the program is eerie almost to the point of creepiness, and all the more effective for it: after a long instrumental prelude, Barber sings the lyrics over the most minimal bass-and-piano unison pedal point, her voice goosed with reverb and wailing softly like a ghost. "Subway Station #5," the original composition that follows, is nervous, jumpy, barely tonal, and moves niftily from a contrapuntal and polyrhythmic introduction into a straight swing section. The problem is that it lasts almost ten minutes, and by the seventh or eighth minute, its ideas seem pretty well played out. "Or Not to Be" and "Yet Another in a Long Series of Yellow Cars" suffer from similar treatment. But her singing on "You Stepped Out of a Dream" and, especially, her sweet and touching rendition of the soul classic "My Girl" are quietly spectacular. There's every reason to expect great things of her in the future. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide Patricia Barber piano, vocals Wolfgang Muthspiel guitar Marc Johnson bass Adam Nussbaum drums, shakers, cheap shoes, finger snaps Carla White finger snaps Big Kahuna finger snaps Tracks: 1.
